Kicking Off a 3-Year Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) Project with Bombardier and TMU

Centennial College’s aerospace applied research program kicked off a new 3-year project with Bombardier Aerospace and Toronto Metropolitan University last Thursday, April 13th. Led by the college's Applied Research, Innovation and Entrepreneurship department, the project focuses on adopting Augmented and Virtual Reality (AR/VR) technologies for aerospace and aviation.
AR/VR technologies are potentially transformative for the aerospace and aviation industries. Their application can increase productivity through increased accuracy and precision, leading to fewer errors, upgraded processes, and improved health and safety. These technologies also provide the opportunity to foster closer collaboration within teams, leading to better decision-making. Furthermore, widespread adoption of AR/VR enables the ability to more efficiently upgrade the skills of personnel employed in aviation. Combined, these benefits will result in increased competitiveness in the global marketplace.
The project investigates the practical applications of AR/VR in aviation training and operations, all the way from the technology's development to its demonstration. This research will expand the college's innovation capacity in AR/VR and machine-human interface, bringing valuable extensions into not only aerospace and aviation applied research but complementary areas of related industries as well.
