March the 14, is Pi Day. (For those of you that don’t get it, the mathematical equation Pi is rounded off to 3.14). We’re holding a special event at noon across all of our campuses to celebrate. Pie’s one of those foods that everyone likes, mostly because of all of the different things you can do with it, and all the ways you can make it. You can make it sweet with fruit, savoury with vegetables or meat, and it can pretty much be eaten at every meal. One thing you wouldn’t expect to find in a pie: Money. Well, not literally. There are real careers revolving around the universal pastry, careers the college can help you join, depending on just what you want to do with the pie in front of you. Careers that could see you do the following…
1. Make a pie
If you don’t know how to make a pie, or want to take the pie-making skills you have to the next level, you can learn how in our Baking Skills program. Over a year, you’ll acquire the talents to become a professional baker and acquire industry certifications like Smart Serve, Safe Food Handlers and CPR. Best of all, you’ll learn how to prepare those pies in our kitchen labs at the state-of-the-art Culinary Arts Centre, because there’s no better way to learn how to bake than by actually baking.
2. Make a healthy pie
While most pies are sweet desserts, they don’t all have to be bad for you. At the same time, it’s also important that people with allergies, or conditions like gluten intolerance, get to (literally) have their piece of the pie.
3. Make a lot of pies (and sell them)
At the end of the day, there’s more to the baking industry than just the baking itself. It’s one thing to be the pie-maker, and another thing to become the pie-seller. If you’re more interested in running things in the baking industry, you can learn through our Baking and Pastry Arts Management program, which teaches you the same baking skills, augmented with managerial experience, complete with a field placement for the practical part of your education. To learn what goes on behind the scenes in a part-time context, you can also take our Hotel, Resort and Restaurant Management program.
4. Make that pie look good
If you have a passion for delicious foods like pies and want to show and tell others how great they are, we can help turn that interest into a career with our Food Media post-graduate program. It’s designed for students who’re already been educated, and want to acquire some new skills. You learn about photography, writing, production, multimedia, social media, and online writing, along with acquiring practical experience to make that pie look as good as it tastes in any of these careers: You could make that pie ready for its close-up as a Food Stylist, take that close-up yourself as a Food Segment Producer for TV, or write about it as a food writer or blogger.
Happy Pi Day!
