\nThe role of a peer tutor helps build and enhance some of my skills. As a peer tutor, I learned to be empathic to fellow students who face difficulties in their courses. This allows me to appreciate the importance of listening, which in turn enables my fellow students to feel comfortable talking to me because they know someone can relate to them. Likewise, this role enables me to learn better the skill of self-awareness since I am able to assess myself as a tutor, based on my interactions with different students. More importantly, I learned to adapt to the situation that the tutee is in. So I try to find ways to simplify things while trying to articulate the course content concepts that the tutee needs my help on.

\nSo some of the skills that I learned being on this team and working with our projects and having connection with the larger network, which is Enactus Canada, that is our, I can say that our mother organization that we come under. I would say one of the biggest things I’ve learned is communication. That is such an important skill that is in verbally, in written when we write our proposals for funding and things like that. I would say when it comes to managing team members, especially since I mean in an H.R. role, the way you say something, how you say it, when you say it, all of those tiny, tiny details matter. And I feel like being part of this team, I have drastically improved on how I communicate. And it’s different because everyone is different and knowing how to sort of adapt to that, is super, super key.

But I knew communication is key when assisting students, faculty and staff and new fresh students out of high school. \nMy participation in ECSLT helped me to build a strong network and gave me confidence to step outside of my comfort zone, to engage in meaningful initiatives and dialogue such as Leadership Vibes podcast. I also served as Centennial Toastmasters club president. I was also a member of the Centennial Anti-Black Racism task force and a guest speaker on Centennial Undiluted podcast addressing racial trauma and anti-black racism. These activities helped me to develop my leadership and communication skills, which are essential skills, both professionally and personally. They have helped me. They have served me well in my career as a social service worker and also in my personal life where I am engaged in multiple community engagements. My biggest takeaway and benefits from the experience outside of the skills learned is a strong network and community of student leaders. I feel a strong sense of connection to my fellow student leaders and staff members in the Centennial Leadership Academy, and I can say I gained lifelong friendships. I have learned more about myself, my leadership style and strengths and areas for growth. I also believe that my active engagement contributed immensely to being awarded the 2022 Centennial Citizenship Award.
\n \n\n\nI developed different tutoring strategies and soft skills like critical thinking, problem solving, customer service, effective communication, active listening, time management etc.
