The intention of this course is for students to develop professional and personal plans that enhance performance and personal well-being. Students will examine a range of career opportunities in the field of human services, and will work on developing oral, written and job readiness skills. The course will cover the Standards of Practice, University options, entrepreneurship, and using various types of job search strategies including web-based options. Lectures will include the importance of conducting oneself in an ethical, competent and accountable manner, and working to build team commitment and spirit. Discussions will also include, thinking and planning, identifying and considering options when problem solving, and striving to deliver results with a high level of consistency over a long period. Students will be expected to model behavior and attitudes that promote advocacy, and support social change throughout the course.

1. Adhere to the professional values and ethics of the Developmental Services Worker Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice
2. Recognize the relevance of the Developmental Services Human Resources (DSHR) Strategy Core Competencies to employment and professional development in the Developmental Services (DS) field
3. Implement strategies to enhance self-care, job performance, and work relationships.
4. Recognize indicators or one’s own stress, fatigue and illness, including bereavement, compassion fatigue and vicarious trauma
5. Identify entrepreneurial skills and standards of practice required of a Developmental Service Worker who is self-employed
6. Use resources, evidence-based practices, and supervision to enhance professional growth
