Description | Genocide Literature offers a comparative analysis of nonfiction, fiction, poetry, documentary, and film, based on key genocidal events from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. The genocidal events covered will include the disappearance of the Beothuk, the Armenian genocide, the Holocaust, the Rwanda genocide, the Sri Lankan genocide, and examples of contemporary genocidal events that have occurred most recently. This course analyzes the specific political and historical contexts in which each of these genocides occur, while also exploring larger comparative frameworks based on colonial histories, socioeconomic and environmental factors, and the struggle for post-independence national autonomy in a modernized and globalized world. Learners will be encouraged to critically analyze the truth claims presented in the literature through rigorous engagement with the primary sources as well as the theoretical texts and secondary research material presented. Through studying the historical, social, and cultural contexts of genocide, students will gain key understanding of issues related to diversity, human rights, and equity in our contemporary world. |
