Description | This course is a study of the complex issue of world hunger. Drawing on a global citizenship and equity framework, students will analyze the structural causes of hunger and poverty in Canada as well as at the international level. The course provides a critical perspective on global food security and food sovereignty. In addition, the impact of colonization, industrialization, and globalization on chronic poverty in the world will be closely examined. The course will explore challenges related to hunger alleviation strategies and the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on food insecurity in Canada and across the world. The reconfiguration of the global agri-food system in view of intersectional markers such as race, class, and gender will also be discussed. The question of how can food be political? will be looked at in the context of the neoliberalization of agricultural policy which has impacted our right to food, access to land, and control over resources. Students will conclude the course by examining hunger alleviation strategies informed by Indigenous knowledge and local food movements. |
