The Black Student Collective (BSC) offers Black students at Centennial College a supportive space to connect, grow, celebrate and thrive. Housed within the Student Community and Engagement department and supported by the wider Centennial College community, the Black Student Collective seeks to provide Black students with the resources, supports and connections needed to strengthen their academic success, well-being and career opportunities.
Background
Anti-Black racism is deeply entrenched in the Canadian higher education system. Black students across Canada have reported experiencing microaggressions, racial slurs, racial profiling, violent threats and contempt from professors, staff and peers and a dire lack of Black representation across all levels of higher education. Not only does this treatment impact Black students’ wellbeing while in higher education, it also negatively affects their graduation rates and professional success.
Centennial College recognizes the importance of addressing anti-Black racism within our institution and aims to provide stronger supports for Black students to succeed. Our Anti-Black Racism Taskforce Commitments include a specific commitment to establishing a network for Black students that offers formal and informal mentorship and support across the College. The Black Student Collective actualizes this commitment.
