Centennial College’s Healthcare Environmental Services Management (HESM) program in Toronto prepares you to manage safe and healthy environments in healthcare facilities. With a mission to keep people safe, this one-of-a-kind program equips students to oversee, mentor, and educate frontline environmental support services staff, while guiding interprofessional colleagues on infection control and best practices. Recognized by Public Health Ontario (PHO), this Toronto health program develops the skills you need to lead teams, prevent infections, and manage environmental support services operations, setting you up for success in a growing field.
What You’ll Learn
In this college health program, you’ll build skills to lead frontline staff, control infections, and keep healthcare spaces safe and efficient. Through hands-on labs and two field placements, you’ll gain real-world experience to prepare for immediate employment. Key topics include:
- Reducing healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) and preventing the spread of viruses
- Mentoring and overseeing best practices for cleaning and disinfecting healthcare surfaces and care units
- Emergency management and risk assessment
- Occupational health and safety protocols
- Managing building operations, property maintenance, preventative maintenance, and repairs
Earn CloroxPro™ HealthyClean™ Certification
As part of the program, you can complete the CloroxPro™ HealthyClean™ Trained Specialist Course, a top industry certification, accredited by the American National Standards Institute National Accreditation Board (ANAB). This online course teaches you:
- How to clean effectively and safely, using the best products and methods.
- The science behind germ spread and ways to prevent infections.
- Practical skills to reduce risks, improve results, and lower costs.
Once you pass the course, you’ll earn a Certificate of Mastery and a digital badge, proving your expertise in healthcare cleaning and infection prevention.
Build Your Career
Graduates of the HESM program may be eligible for memberships in the Canadian Healthcare Housekeepers' Association and the Canadian Association of Environmental Management, which can boost your career opportunities.

- The Healthcare Environmental Services Management program will incorporate classroom lectures, hands-on practical lab experience, field placements, field trips and guest speaker presentations.
- Experiential learning and practical skill development will occur on campus in designated lab areas.
- Included in this School of Community and Health Studies program will be two field placements in semester 3 and 4.

As a Healthcare Environmental Services Management graduate, you'll be able to reliably demonstrate the ability to:
- Support the provision of a healthy, safe and sanitary health care environment according to guidelines set by current legislation, standards and regulations;
- Analyze infection prevention and control practices to ensure compliance with current legislation standards and regulations;
- Effectively work as part of an interprofessional health care team to ensure successful functioning of the facility;
- Apply quality management principles in compliance with requirements established by the organization and regulatory bodies;
- Manage the health care environmental services operations as outlined by the departmental/organizational business plan;
- Develop ongoing personal and professional development strategies and plans to achieve realistic career goals and to enhance management skills;
- Analyze and evaluate the impact of social, ethical and legal issues on individual and/or organizational operations within a health care environmental services context;
- Contribute to the development, implementation and evaluation of recruitment, orientation, training, development and retention programs for health care environmental services employees;
- Develop and evaluate a departmental budget that reflects fiscal accountability and financial planning;
- Apply effective human resource management practices to enhance organizational and individual productivity and performance;

Admission Requirements
Academic Requirements
- Ontario Secondary School Diploma (OSSD), or equivalent, or mature status (19 years or older)
- Grade 12 English (C or U), or equivalent (minimum grade required), or take the Centennial English Admission Test
- Grade 11 Mathematics (M or U) or Grade 12 Mathematics (C or U), or equivalent (minimum grade required), or take a Centennial College Math Skills Assessment for Admission
Additional Requirements
Field Placement Requirements
After admission but prior to each program field placement students require:
- Obtain a clear police check with vulnerable sector screening. Vulnerable Sector Screenings must be issued within six months of each placement start date. Any previous criminal record must be pardoned.
- Successful completion and annual renewal of a recognized course in CPR (Level C)
- Successful completion of a recognized course in standard first aid
- Mask fit testing will be provided by Centennial College (shaving of portion of face may be required to meet safety standards)
- Completion of your pre-clearance health form by a physician or nurse practitioner stating that you meet the health requirements of legislated acts, ministry guidelines and agency policies
- COVID-19 Vaccination Passport
All of the above requirements must be in effect for the duration of each placement.

If you are applying through the Better Jobs Ontario Program, please apply at the Employment Training Centre (Progress Campus). If you have previously attended a full-time program at Centennial College, you may be eligible for a Program Transfer. Visit Enrolment Services at any Campus for information.
All other applicants must apply online at Ontariocolleges.ca. A non-refundable application fee of $125 must accompany applications. The fee is payable online, by telephone, online banking, by mail, or in-person to Ontariocolleges.ca. For more information go to Ontariocolleges.ca Application Fees.

2. Submit Documents
Domestic Applicants
Current Ontario high school students and graduates from Ontario high schools: Notify your guidance counsellor that you have applied to college and your school will forward transcripts to Centennial College via Ontariocolleges.ca.
Graduates of college/university, or high school outside Ontario but within Canada: You are responsible for requesting that your educational institute sends any required documents and transcripts to Ontariocolleges.ca.
Domestic applicants who attended school outside of Canada: If you are submitting transcripts to meet admission requirements, you must have the transcripts assessed by an independent credential assessment agency such as World Education Services (WES) or International Credential Assessment Service (ICAS). 3. Confirm Your Offer of Admission
Offers of Admission are sent by mail to eligible applicants. When you receive your offer, you must login to your account at Ontariocolleges.ca and confirm before the Deadline to Confirm noted in your offer letter.
You may confirm only one college and one program offer at a time.

When you confirm your Offer of Admission at Centennial College you are given access to your personal myCentennial account where you can check your email, grades, register for courses, pay tuition fees, and see your class timetable.
4. Pay Fees
Centennial fees statements are sent by email to your personal email account and to your myCentennial email account. Fees statements are not mailed.
You must make a minimum payment by the Fees Deadline noted in your Fees Statement or your seat may be given to another applicant.

You have not submitted your minimum fee payment by the deadline
